Background

Since graduating from university in March 2021, I had been teaching Japanese at an online school for more than two years. During my university years, I passed the Japanese Language Teaching Proficiency Test, intending to spend a year teaching Japanese in Taiwan on a working holiday post-graduation. However, with the working holiday visa program being suspended just before my graduation due to Covid-19, I shifted my focus and decided to teach Japanese online instead.

Experience with Online Lessons

Teaching online turned out to be an incredibly rewarding experience. Despite being the teacher, I found myself learning so much, especially from students who shared fascinating insights about their countries—places I’ve yet to visit but now long to explore. While the online school where I taught was fantastic, my desire to create custom materials and teach Japanese in my own style led me to sign up for Preply. Check out this article to discover why I made the move to Preply.

The University I Graduated From

I graduated from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, a national university in Japan renowned for its comprehensive language studies—it’s the place in Japan where languages are studied most intensely. My choice of major was Thai, a tribute to my Thai mother who passed away when I was a child. Apart from Thai, I understand English and Chinese, having immersed myself in a wide array of languages, linguistics, and foreign culture during my time there. My fascination with Buddhism led me to delve into Thai Buddhist literature for my graduation thesis. Though my mother has passed away, this exploration brought me a step closer to understanding her world, even if just slightly.

Study Life in Thailand

I spent a year studying in Bangkok, where I embraced a variety of experiences. Among these, I earned a professional diving license in Tao Island,

and became a monk at a temple for two months.

Benefits of Learning Foreign Languages

Despite being half Thai and half Japanese, I didn’t speak a word of Thai until I got to university. However, even after beginning my studies in university, I managed to learn Thai quite well. Learning a language reveals new worlds to us. I hope that through studying Japanese, you too can discover a wonderful world that you never knew existed.
